The concept for Project Shift was realized in 2018 after a near-tragic incident where I was t-boned on my motorcycle. The difference between severe leg trauma and my near miss was defined by milliseconds and millimetres. The thought of how I would ride if I ever lost my leg always lingered. It was never a thought of “if” I would ride, but an emotive inspiration of “how” and my design research highlighted many amputee motorcycle riders feel the same way. As a designer and engineer who identified a problem, I felt it was now my responsibility to solve it. Honours year presented me with an opportunity to put my degree into practice and solve a real issue. This project not only pushed me as an Industrial Designer and Mechanical Engineer but inspired me to improve and expand the skills I have acquired during my time and university to try and make the world a better place. It was an honour to receive both the dean’s award and the outstanding design award for my project. Starting the degree, Industrial design did not come naturally but thanks to the many great mentors and teachers who took the time to educate and direct me as well as many sleepless nights I feel I have achieved a great deal. The goal is to continue honing my craft well into the future. It’s been a great 5 years and I look forward to what comes next.
